Excellent topic and article!

We've been vending shows for a while and in addition to the ability to sell animals and develop a reputation with the reptile community, we’ve found that you can learn quite a bit as well. Make it a point to talk to the customers as a fellow herp keeper, not just a customer. As important, walk around and talk to other vendors- you’ll be surprised at how much everyone is willing to share their experiences in the hobby/business. Email me if you have any specific questions I can help with.

Pricing is one of the most difficult aspects to understand for the first time seller. DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

Great Point about the material- It took us several shows before we got this right. We keep different supplies in different tote boxes- An admin box to hold tape, push pins, business cards, pens, mailing list request, scissors, etc. A supplies box for our smaller supplies we sell. An MRP box containing all the crested gecko diet. Etc.

Another good idea to providing simple signs on your table with your business name on them. Use Microsoft Word or a similar program to create a neat ‘2 on a page’ graphic text of your business name and place on either end of the table.

Customers- Here’s a secret: treat your customers as fellow hobbyist and not like customers! If they sense your enthusiasm for your animals, the animals will sell themselves. Remain standing for the whole show and greet those stopping at your display with a smile and an a hardy “Hi, how are you doing today?”.
